Description

Manufactured by TQC Sheen, our paint testing specialist brand, they’re also known as fineness of grind gauge and they’re ideal for determining particle and grind sizes. They’re also relied upon for all kinds of paint testing, smoothness testing, pigment testing and sample testing.

Our Grindometers are precision instruments used to determine particle size and fineness of materials.

What is fineness of grind gauge testing?

Fineness of grind testing is essential for paint manufacturers. It’s also relied upon by many end users who inspect the content of their product ingredients during the production process. It’s a simple yet effective way to measure the uniformity of particles contained using a grindometer.

Get into the grindometer groove!

Our grindometers are available in three models: single, double or wide groove. Depending on the selected model there are three different parameters: Microns (µm), Hegman (NS), and North (PCU).

• Double grooves with graded slopes graduated in different parameters: Microns (µm) , Hegman (NS) and North (PCU)
• Single wide groove with the parameters: Microns (µm) , Hegman (NS)
• Single groove with the parameter: Microns (µm)

The finest in fineness of grind gauge testing

Our range of grindometers are made from hardened stainless steel with an accuracy of 2 µm.

Multi-sector grindometer functionality

Our grindometers are used for all sorts of applications across industries including: agriculture, automotive, beverage, construction and civil engineering, cosmetics, defense, education, food, industrial, inks and coatings, marine, medical devices, paper and pulp and pharmaceutical.

Our paint testing portfolio

Across the Industrial Physics portfolio we have plenty of paint testing devices and accessories to choose from. Be sure to examine products including the TQC Sheen Automated Fineness Of Grind Gauge Scanner or the TQC Sheen SuperPIG Paint Inspection Gauge III.

Model selection guide

The right grindometer depends on the particle size range you need to measure and the reference scale your standard specifies:

  • Double-groove models (VF2110 to VF2113) – measuring ranges 0-15, 0-25, 0-50 and 0-100 microns. Read out in microns, NS (Hegman) and PCU (North). Suit paint, ink and coatings QC to ASTM D1210, ISO 1524, DIN 53203, GOST 6589 and NF T 30-046.
  • Wide-groove models (VF2120 to VF2123) – same measuring ranges as the double-groove but with a 37 mm groove width for improved detection of coarse particles. Read out in microns and NS (Hegman).
  • Single-groove models – reads out in microns only for QC applications where the Hegman/North scales are not required.

DIN-ISO wide-range – custom-configured to any measuring range between 0 and 5000 microns.

Precision and build

The gauge base and bevelled scraper are machined from sub-zero vacuum-hardened medical-grade stainless tool steel with an accuracy of plus/minus 2 microns. The base measures 175 x 60 x 12 mm with a 120 mm groove length; the scraper is 75 x 38 x 8 mm and shaped to be held easily.

Automation and productivity

For high-throughput laboratories, TQC Sheen grindometers are compatible with the TQC Sheen Automated Fineness of Grind Gauge Scanner. The scanner objectively rates particle dispersion in paints, lacquers, pigments, fillers and chocolate, distinguishing between air bubbles and true particles and delivering all results, data and images in an electronic format.

FAQs

  • Choose the model by how many scales you need to read and the range by your material’s expected fineness. Single-groove gauges read microns only and suit routine checks; double-groove gauges read microns, Hegman (NS), and North (PCU) on graded slopes; wide-groove gauges read microns and Hegman across a 37 mm groove for easier reading. Ranges run from 0-15 µm (VF2104) for fine dispersions up to 0-500 µm (VF2124) for coarse materials. If most of your work sits at the fine end, a lower-range gauge gives you finer graduation and a more precise reading.

  • They are three ways of expressing the same fineness-of-grind measurement. Microns (µm) give the particle size directly. The Hegman scale (NS) is a North American reading where a higher number means a finer grind. The North scale (PCU) is another comparative reading used in some coatings specifications. Double-groove models carry all three so you can report in whichever scale your customer or standard requires; single and wide-groove models carry fewer.

  • The TQC Sheen Grindometers are available in single, double, and wide groove models. Each type offers different measurement parameters:
    Single groove – Microns (µm)
Double groove – Microns (µm), Hegman (NS), and North (PCU)
Wide groove – Microns (µm) and Hegman (NS)

Your choice depends on whether you need to measure in multiple scales, or require a groove size suited to your test material.

  • TQC Sheen Grindometers are suitable for a wide variety of materials, including paints, lacquers, inks, pigments, fillers, food products, composites, elastomers, and liquids. They are commonly used in industries such as coatings, automotive, construction, paper, and pharmaceuticals.

  • Each TQC Sheen Grindometer is manufactured from hardened stainless steel with an accuracy of ± 2 µm. A calibration certificate is included with every unit, and periodic checks are recommended if the instrument is used heavily in quality control operations.
