Coefficient of Friction Testing
Coefficient of friction (COF) test and inspect solutions for a wide range of applications. Whether you’re testing a new paper board coating, a polymer or plastic peel or corrugated paperboard, we have the testing machine to help you get to grips with their properties.
Our coefficient of friction testing equipment
From peel testing to slide angle COF testers, we have the best coefficient of friction test equipment for your materials. Across our trusted product brands such as Testing Machines Inc., we have reliable and efficient units to help you meet industry standards.
Meeting testing standards for COF
The standard testing method for determining the static and kinetic friction of films and plastic coatings is ASTM D1894. It is equally effective to use a stationary sled with a moving plane or a moving sled with a stationary plane when calculating connect of friction, according to ASTM, opening up your options.
Understanding coefficient of friction testing
Used to find out what happens when two items rub against each other, coefficient of friction testing can be carried on a wide range of materials. It is a straightforward and standardized method of determining the moving and starting resistance of one surface that is being dragged across another and can be calculated for both kinetic and static states.
In static COF testing, a sled Is placed on the surface that is being tested and the amount of force needed to move the sled is measured and then divided by the weight of the sled, to give a COF calculation and rating.
For kinetic COF tests, a sled is also used and the result is calculated by working out the average force needed during uniform sliding of the surfaces, divided by the sled weight.
Why coefficient of friction testing is so important
As well as being an important part of the testing process to see if materials can be safely used during the manufacturing process or as part of a product’s packaging, it can also indicate how well coated corrugated or paperboard will stand up to the rigors of shipping, handling and sales.
