Compression Testing

Compress with the best: Industrial Physics

Compression and crush testing

Test and evaluate the strength of your materials, products, and components with our compression testing machines. We’ve got a whole range of solutions from brands rated and vouched for by our experienced engineers, so you can get the accurate compression strength, yield strength, deflection, and modulus test results you need.

Our compression test and inspect solutions

Our experts can help you choose the best compression testers to meet your requirements. Have a unique request? We can configure a solution for you. Simply let us know the size, geometry, and strength characteristics of your samples. We’ll then identify the right machine and compression plates needed to crush your samples, giving you the highly accurate test data you need to improve your processes.

Understanding testing standards for compression and crush testing

Compression and crush testing are common and essential parts of any corrugated, paper and board QA process. The various tests are designed to illustrate the peak load the sample can handle.

Edge crush testing: Popular options include edge crush testing, which is particularly useful for working out the overall strength of a sample of corrugated board. It measures the cross-direction force needed to crush the specimen to the point of failure. Find out more about the process in our ECT FAQs.

Short span compression testing: Another popular choice is span compression testing, also known as SCT testing. This relatively new method is a way to predict the compressive strength of corrugated paper by inserting a single piece of liner board, corrugated paper or similar is inserted into pneumatic clamps, precisely aligned to produce a sample free length of only 0.70mm. The sample is then axially compressed until it reaches the point of failure.

S-testing: Another alternative technique is S-testing, which closely correlates with Corrugating Medium Test results but is far more accurate and time efficient. It also uses a clamping system, which introduces an offset to the free length of the sample and creates an axial compression that reveals an s-shaped crush of failure zone. Get more insight into SCT and s-testing in our guide to short span compression testing.

Yield strength testing: We can also help you with testing machinery that can determine where the yield point of your sample is.  Yield strength is the point on a stress–strain curve where elastic behavior ends and plastic behavior begins and is an invaluable piece of information for everything from the manufacturing process to the behavior of the sample throughout its lifespan. Find out more about yield strength.
