The semi-automatic CMC-KUHNKE Z310 Combination Seam Gauge provides precise seam thickness and countersink depth measurements for both food and beverage cans, including a 360° scan around the can.
The CMC-KUHNKE Z310 Combination Seam Gauge is a high-precision, time-saving device for measuring seam thickness and countersink depth in food and beverage cans. Designed for beverage producers, food can manufacturers and fillers and packaging quality control laboratories, the Z310 helps ensure consistent seam integrity across high-volume production lines. This powerful universal gauge delivers semi-automated, multi-measuring capabilities, helping teams improve inspection speed, reduce manual effort and maintain reliable quality standards.
The Z310 helps manufacturers detect seam variation early, reducing the risk of leaks, contamination and product recalls.
By combining seam thickness and countersink depth measurement in one system, it reduces inspection time and improves workflow efficiency.
Semik-automated multi-point measurement helps deliver consistent, repeatable results across every can, supporting reliable quality control.
360° seam profiling provides deeper insight into seam integrity, helping identify defects that may be missed with limited sampling.
The Z310 streamlines the process of measuring key parameters in food and beverage can seams:
These combined measurements allow quality teams to verify seam formation and ensure packaging performance meets required specifications before products leave the production line.
| Measurement Feature | Accuracy | R&R |
| Seam Thickness | +/- 0.010 mm | 0.020 mm |
| Countersink Depth | +/- 0.020 mm | 0.040 mm |
The Z310 Combination Seam Gauge rotates cans effortlessly to ensure precise measurement angles. It can inspect up to 50 points around a can, as well as a full 360° scan of the seam thickness.
This high-resolution measurement capability helps identify localised seam defects and maintain consistent seam quality across every unit produced.
Designed to optimize workflow efficiency, the Z310 offers automated can rotation, simultaneous multi-point measurements, and automatic data transfer, reducing manual effort and increasing reliability.
This enables faster inspection cycles and helps reduce operator workload while maintaining dependable and repeatable results.
For seam thickness measurements, the Z310 Combination Seam Gauge is very easy to use. Simply take your seamed can, and the thickness of seams are measured using a contact probe at defined positions around the can. It can also provide a 360-degree seam thickness scan around the can.
For countersink depth, it is a similar process through using a contact probe to measure the countersink from the top edge of the can’s seam when sat on the gauge location plate. The countersink probe can measure the lowest part of the countersink and can also measure the depth at a fixed radial position.
This straightforward process allows operators to quickly verify seam integrity and identify potential issues before they impact product quality or production output.
Equipped with an easy-to-read touchscreen interface, the Z310 provides clear measurement data, test stage progress, and graphical result visualization.
This helps operators interpret results quickly and make informed decisions during quality inspections.

We enjoy sharing the knowledge we’ve gained over many years of working in the beverage and canning industry.
In the knowledgebase section of our website we’ve published lots of blogs on the subject. If you’d like to read up on double seam inspection tips then why not start with this piece on how to measure a double seam. Then you could take a look at this article exploring the wider aspects of can inspection and how to do it. Then, if you’re a bit of a history buff, you may enjoy reading our popular history of a can timeline!
And if you’re still keen to learn more then you can access our exclusive Industrial Physics webinar guide to seam inspection with our Global Product Line Director Steve Davis – a world-leader in the field of metal packaging.
In recent years the beverage industry has optimized its closure business and cut back on the amount of packaging used. Companies have down gauged their cans, material thickness has been reduced, and production speeds have increased. As a result we’re seeing lots of new seaming problems emerge in high numbers.
It’s always been important, but more than ever, double seam inspection is an essential check that will protect you against leaking cans and ensure the quality of your metal packaging.
So you need a high-quality double seam inspection instrument that will save time, hassle and cost while protecting you against unwanted product recalls.
At Industrial Physics, we’ve mastered metal packaging – in fact, twenty years ago a brand in our family became recognized as a world leader in this market by inventing automatic, double seam inspection. Our solutions are varied – whether you’re looking for destructive, non-destructive, or in-line equipment, we can help. Find out more about our solutions in our product booklet.
