TQC Sheen Pretreatment Test Kit (PTK)

The PTK Pretreatment Test Kit brings the key surface-preparation checks into one portable case for coatings inspectors working on steel prior to painting. It covers soluble salt (Bresle), dust, surface profile and cleanliness assessment, so contamination and profile faults are caught before coating is applied. Available as the Basic Kit or the Full Kit, with optional items that fit the pre-cut foam lining.

Description

Why pretreatment inspection matters

A coating fails from the substrate up. Even small quantities of soluble salts trapped under a paint layer attract moisture through their hygroscopic action, leading to blistering, corrosion under the coating and premature paint system failure. Recycled blast media becomes contaminated with soluble salts from previous work, transferring those salts to every surface it cleans. Blasted surfaces may look perfect, but salts are one of the most harmful contaminants and cannot be seen with the naked eye.

The Pretreatment Test Kit gives paint inspectors a portable set of tools to control every relevant parameter before coating is applied – soluble salts, dust, blast media contamination, surface profile, edge condition and cleanliness.

Basic Kit vs Full Kit

Basic Kit (SP7315) contains:

  • Bresle Test Kit (SP7310) with conductivity meter and 25 Bresle patches for surface soluble salt measurement to ISO 8502-6 and ISO 8502-9 using the Direct Sampling Procedure (DSP).
  • Dust Test kit for surface cleanliness assessment per ISO 8502-3.
  • Telescopic inspection mirror.

Full Kit (SP7316) adds:

  • UV pocket flashlight – detects organic contamination (fat, grease, alkaline residues) that fluoresces under UV and cannot be seen with the naked eye. Contamination that blasting alone cannot remove.
  • Multi-functional stainless steel inspection tool – ISO 2409 cross-cut adhesion tests at 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 mm spacing, X-cut Andreas cross, wet film thickness gauge 50 to 160 microns, and edge grind check for correct edge roundness.
  • Additional accessories for determining contamination levels in recycled blast media.
  • A number of optional items that can be selected against specific inspection standards – see the datasheet or contact us to configure.

If you only need to measure surface soluble salts, the Bresle Test Kit (SP7310) is available as a single-purpose alternative to the full PTK.

FAQs

  • The kit assesses the main parameters that determine whether steel is ready to coat: soluble salt contamination using the Bresle method, dust on blast-cleaned surfaces, surface profile (anchor pattern) and cleanliness grade. Checking these before coating reduces the risk of poor adhesion, under-coating corrosion and premature coating failure.

  • The SP7315 Basic Kit contains a Bresle test for surface and blast media measurement, a dust test kit and a telescopic inspection mirror. The SP7316 Full Kit adds a larger range of instruments for profile, cleanliness and climate assessment. Optional items can also be selected individually, and all fit within the pre-cut foam lining of the carry case.

  • The Bresle salt contamination test conforms to ISO 8502-6 and ISO 8502-9, which describe the Bresle method for assessing soluble salt levels on blast-cleaned surfaces. Individual components in the Full Kit reference further standards for dust, profile and cleanliness testing.

  • ISO 8502-6 gives a recommended dissolution time of 10 minutes. Many inspectors test at 90 seconds in practice, so the test time should be agreed with the relevant parties before testing begins to keep results comparable.

  • Yes. As standard across the Industrial Physics group, the kit is covered by a one-year parts-and-labour warranty. Global service support, including calibration, maintenance and spare parts, is available through the group’s service network.
