Standards
International ISO 2409 is a standard for assessing the resistance of paint coatings and varnishes. Known as the cross-cut test, it involves cutting through the substrate with a right-angle lattice pattern.
This test method can take into account the adhesion of the coating to either the preceding coat or the substrate. But it shouldn’t be used as a means to measure adhesion. If you do need a measurement of adhesion, then check out the ISO 4624 method on our page here.
Although the ISO 2409 test is primarily intended for use in the laboratory, it’s also suitable for field testing.
This ISO standard method can be described as a ‘pass / fail’ test.
You can use the ISO 2409 test on finished objects or specially prepared test specimens.
A cross-cut test of a multi-coat system enables you to assess the separation resistance between individual layers of the coating.
Although the cross-cut test method is applicable to paint on hard (e.g. metal) and soft (e.g. wood and plaster) substrates, you’ll need to follow a different test procedure for these substrates. ISO 2409 testing is also unsuitable for coatings of total thickness greater than 250 µm, or for textured coatings.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 2409 testing?
Several of our machines and devices are built to support precise cross-cut testing to ISO 2409 standards.
Cross Cut Adhesion Test KIT CC3000
A high quality cross-cut testing device that tests the adhesion of dry coats of paint on their substrate by cutting through their coating a number of times.
Two series of parallel cuts, cross angled to each other, obtains a pattern of 25 or 100 similar squares. The ruled area is evaluated using a table chart after a short treatment with a stiff brush, or adhesive tape for hard substrates.
This robust, precision engineered instrument is fully adjustable, while the cutter is guided by two ball bearings for reproducible results. It’s suitable to measure coatings up to 250 µm thick. The ideal device to support your ISO 2409 testing.

Our TQC Sheen Adhesion Test Tape (ISO 2409:1999) is fiber reinforced and helps you to meet the requirements of international testing standards.
Ensure precision and reliability in your adhesion testing with the TQC Tape For Adhesion Test to ISO 2409 2003
TQC Sheen Cross Cut Adhesion Test Kits assess coating adhesion by cutting a lattice pattern through a dry paint or coating film and classifying how much material lifts. Three cutter series (CC1000 multi-cutter with eight round edges, CC2000 single cutter, CC3000 depth-adjustable wheel-guided cutter) work with a full range of blades covering coating thicknesses from 0 to 250 µm on hard or soft substrates. Used by paints and coatings laboratories, industrial paint QC teams, automotive coating suppliers and coating applicators, the kits classify results to ISO 2409:2020, ASTM D3359-23 and GOST 15140 - portable, no power required, results in minutes.
