Introducing ASTM D4417 – Industrial Physics
ASTM D4417 is a global ASTM standard method for measuring the surface profile of blast cleaned steel.
The quality of correct pretreatment of a surface prior to application of the coating is essential. You need to get it right to ensure the quality of the coating and achieve its optimum lifetime. If you’re seeking a quality finish then surface profile testing is an important inspection to include.
The height of a surface profile has been shown to be a factor in the performance of various steel coatings. These ASTM test methods will enable you to measure the profile of abrasive blast cleaned surfaces in the field, shop, and laboratory.
What’s the need for surface profile testing?
The profile of a surface influences how a coating you apply to it will perform. It makes a difference to adhesive strength and the coverage and consumption of the coating material. Very smooth surfaces with low surface profiles are tough to paint, with their poor adhesion. But surfaces with high surface profiles require very thick coatings.
Surface profile should be measured before you start painting. This is to ensure a prepared surface conforms to the requirements specified by the manufacturer of your coating sample.

It comes with a sharp tungsten carbide replaceable tip for surface profile measurement and a hardened round tip for coating thickness measurement. You also get a glass plate for zero calibration and a handy leather carry pouch to carry the thickness gauge and accessories in.

It’s developed for measuring so-called ‘replica tapes’ such as Testex®. The large clear display makes it easy to read under all conditions and the values can be displayed in either microns or inches. More good news? Our thickness gauge comes with a protective hard case you can carry it around in.
