ISO 8501-1 is an international ISO testing standard that guides you in how to prepare steel substrates before you apply paints and related products.
The International Organization of Standards (ISO) produces a wide range of ISO standards to guide manufacturers, production lines and laboratories when checking the integrity of packaging, products, and materials across many industries.
The ISO 8501-1 test describes a visual assessment of surface cleanliness in terms of grading rust and how to prepare uncoated steel substrates and steel substrates after you’ve removed previous coatings.
The performance of protective coatings of paint and related products applied to steel is significantly affected by the state of the steel surface immediately prior to painting. The principal factors that are known to influence this performance are:
International Standards ISO 8501, ISO 8502 and ISO 8503 provide methods of assessing these factors, while ISO 8504 offers guidance on the preparation methods that are available for cleaning steel substrates, indicating the capabilities of each in attaining specified levels of cleanliness.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 8501-1 steel surface preparation testing?
TQC Sheen Pretreatment Test Kit (PTK)
Manufactured by TQC Sheen, our paint testing specialist brand, our basic and full pretreatment test kits are especially composed to control all relevant parameters during the pretreatment of steel prior to painting.
The strong double walled suitcase holds a smart selection of inspection tools and measuring devices to assist the paint inspector on a survey to inspect blast cleaned steelwork.
TQC Sheen Illustrated book ISO 8501-1
We have created an illustrated guide to support your steel surface preparation for the ISO 8501-1, ISO 8501-2, ISO 8501-3 and ISO 8501-4 testing procedures.
The hardback book contains high-quality color photographs for estimating the rust levels and purity levels after cleaning manually or by machine (also with blasting). The target audience is blasting and painting companies and their clients, paint technicians, advice bureaus and industrial coating businesses.
Be sure to check out some of the other steel testing instruments from across the Industrial Physics portfolio.
We’ve been supporting metal manufacturers and users to test their products for over half a century. From copper to steel testing, you’ll find equipment to give you the results you need. We can also test alloys, aluminum and composites – so you can make sure you have the chance to find the right material for the job.
We like to share our experience with our customers. Across the knowledgebase section of our website, we publish lots of blogs on related subjects. For example, why not have a look at this blog on understanding elongation and tensile strength testing? Then you could try this one on creep failure versus fatigue in metals.
