Description

Developed by TQC Sheen, our specialist paint and coatings testing brand, the Digital Rotothinner DV2700 is a rotational viscosity tester that gives you controlled, repeatable measurements during paint thinning and quality control. Fluid viscosity affects how paints, inks and coatings flow, level and cure – so accurate measurement is essential from batch formulation through to production release.

Used by paints and coatings laboratories, automotive OEMs and their coatings suppliers, printing ink producers, adhesives manufacturers, and cosmetics and food QC teams, the Digital Rotothinner supports sample preparation and release testing in both research and production environments.

Every DV2700 ships with a 240V/110V power adapter, handle, user manual and calibration certificate. Spindles and calibration oils are ordered separately based on your viscosity range.

Why it matters

Get batch-to-batch results you can defend in an audit. A stable drive system, microprocessor control and automatic multi-point calibration deliver 1 percent-of-full-scale accuracy and repeatability, so viscosity readings are consistent between operators, shifts and sites – not down to who took the reading or when.

See how structured materials behave under shear. Because more structured fluids need time under the rotating spindle before their viscosity settles, the timed mode records shear-dependent viscosity at pre-selected intervals. R&D teams get comparable data on shear performance and stability across formulations – not a single misleading number.

Thin to spec faster, with less rework. Continuous monitoring during solvent and thinner addition means you hit the target supply or ready-for-use viscosity in one pass instead of testing, adjusting and re-testing. Fewer batches sit on hold, and fewer are corrected downstream.

Three measuring ranges, three modes, one instrument

The Digital Rotothinner covers a combined range of 0.1 to 350 poise (10 to 35,000 cP) across three interchangeable spindles – so one instrument handles thin solvent-based paints through to heavily structured pastes and adhesives:

Three operating modes cover the main use cases:

  • Manual – a single spot reading, taken when the handle is at the lowest point
  • Max-hold – displays the maximum reading during the measurement (useful for structured materials whose viscosity peaks then falls under shear)
  • Timed – takes readings at pre-selected intervals for shear performance and stability analysis over time

How the Digital Rotothinner works

The operator fills a tin container with the sample and positions it on the magnetic ring on top of the base. Lowering the handle submerses the spindle in the sample; at the lowest point the spindle begins rotating at a constant 562 rpm. The four-line backlit display shows the actual measured viscosity in poise or centipoise.

Free-flowing fluids give a fast reading. More structured materials take longer because the spindle applies shear that influences the reading – which is exactly why the timed and max-hold presets exist.

After the reading, the handle can be lifted to a level where the spindle sits just below the rim of the sample container. Spin-off recovers the sample; raising the handle to its full extent switches the spindle off automatically. A quick-release chuck swaps spindles in seconds and simplifies cleaning.

Viscosity testing to international standards

The Digital Rotothinner supports viscosity testing to international standards including:

  • BS 3900-A7 – Determination of the viscosity of paint at a high rate of shear (the Rotothinner method)
  • ISO 2884-2 – Paints and varnishes: determination of viscosity using rotational viscometers, disc or ball spindles at specified speeds

Viscosity testing product portfolio

The Digital Rotothinner sits within our paints and coating inspection equipment range. Complementary viscosity instruments from TQC Sheen include the Digital Krebs Viscometer for Krebs-unit (KU) testing, the TQC Sheen Immersion Viscosity Cups for flow-time testing to ASTM D1200, and the TQC Sheen Coatmaster Flex for downstream wet and cured coating thickness measurement.

What happens after you enquire

When you enquire about the Digital Rotothinner, our TQC Sheen specialists will confirm which spindle or combination of spindles you need based on the viscosity range of your paints, coatings, inks or other formulations. They will recommend the calibration oils to bundle with the instrument, and confirm delivery timelines.

For purchasing teams, we provide clear SKU references – the DV2700 base instrument plus DV2010, DV2011 and DV2012 spindles – quotation turnaround, and the technical documentation you need for internal sign-off. A calibration certificate is included with every unit. After delivery we can walk operators through spindle selection, spin-off cleaning, and using the manual, max-hold and timed modes so your team gets consistent results from day one.

Service, warranty and ongoing support

The Digital Rotothinner is backed by the Industrial Physics global service and support network. Every unit ships with a calibration certificate, and automatic multi-point calibration is built in – no dongle required. Our teams support calibration verification with certified mineral calibration oils, replacement spindles and spare parts, and technical support throughout the working life of the instrument. Every instrument is covered by a one-year warranty (parts and labour) as standard. Contact our support team to arrange a service or request spares.

Operator training is available covering spindle selection, use of the three measurement modes, and correct sample preparation and cleaning procedure so results stay comparable across operators and sites. Our global support network means help is available wherever you operate.
