The Machu Scratching Tool is used to prepare coated test panels before a Machu corrosion test. A 1 mm cutter scribes a crosswise incision through the coating down to the metal substrate, exposing the coating-substrate interface to the acidified salt solution in the TQC Sheen Machu Test Bath. This scribe is what allows the Machu test to accelerate corrosion at the coating edge in a reproducible, standardized way. Also used for cross-cut adhesion assessment on coated substrates in coating and surface treatment laboratories. Complies with ISO 17872 (guidelines for the introduction of scribe marks through coatings on metallic panels for corrosion testing).
The Basic model (VF8600, CC2000-type grip) features a self-aligning knife bracket that ensures a perpendicular, consistent cut through coatings of approximately 80 μm thickness – a solid choice for standard powder coating and paint layers. The Professional model (VF8605, CC3000-type grip) adds adjustable cutting depth and dual ball bearings that maintain precise contact with the substrate, delivering highly reproducible results on coatings up to 750 μm maximum depth – the right choice for thicker protective coatings, variable coating stacks, or Qualicoat and QIB accredited laboratories where inter-operator reproducibility is audited.
The Machu Scratching Tool complies with ISO 17872 (paints and varnishes – guidelines for the introduction of scribe marks through coatings on metallic panels for corrosion testing). It is a mandatory test tool in Qualicoat and QIB (Qualicoat International Board) accredited laboratories for powder coating quality certification on aluminum architectural profiles. Also used as a screening tool for rapid coating evaluation in R&D across corrosion, adhesion and surface treatment applications.
Replacement 1 mm cutter blades are ordered as spares matched to the tool version: Spare Machu Knife CC2000 – 1mm (VF8610) fits the VF8600 Basic tool, and Spare Machu Knife CC3000 – 1mm (VF8611) fits the VF8605 Professional tool. Blades are hardened steel and sized to ISO 17872, Qualicoat and QIB specifications. Replace when the blade shows visible wear, when scribe lines start to appear uneven, or on a scheduled QMS interval (typical practice is annual replacement for high-throughput labs).
Each Machu Scratching Tool ships with the ergonomic grip and one 1 mm cutter blade fitted (matched to the tool version – CC2000 or CC3000 type). Ordered separately: replacement blades (VF8610 for Basic, VF8611 for Professional), and companion equipment including the TQC Sheen Machu Test Bath (VF8700) for the immersion test itself, and the TQC Sheen CC2000 Cross Cut Adhesion Test Kit for broader coating adhesion QC. Every tool is supplied with a 1 year parts and labour warranty as standard – our Industrial Physics group commitment across all brands.
