ISO 17872 is an international ISO standard that guides the introduction of scribe marks through coatings on metallic panels that are used for corrosion testing.
This ISO method details best practice methods of scribing coated steel or test-pieces for corrosion tests where the coating system is applied at dry film thicknesses of less than 500 μm.
So what is a scribing test and why is it important? Scribing is a marking process that enables you to mark your metallic panels with text, logos or codes. It’s produced by a carbide or diamond tip that penetrates and indents the surface. A deep groove is created during the scribing test, forming continuous lines across concave, round, flat, or arched surfaces.
The ISO 17872 scribing test is only intended to be followed as a guideline. It’s based on the results of a collaborative trial, for which no subsequent corrosion testing is carried out to determine the suitability of the scribe marks for the test.
