Introducing DIN 50021 - Industrial Physics
DIN 50021 is a global DIN international standard for salt spray testing using different sodium chloride solutions.
The salt spray test serves as an inspection of resistance to corrosion. This popular DIN test is used to recreate realistic climatic conditions to see how samples of various material types will respond to them.
Salt spray testing is popular for metallic samples, but stone, ceramics, and polymers may also be inspected. It’s also known as salt fog testing and it’s essential for makers or users of corrosion protecting surface coatings.
The DIN 50021 testing process
The DIN 50021 standard specifies the salt spray testing requirements which corrosion testing apparatus and corrosive agents must meet. The aim being to enable identical conditions to be reproduced in all cases in which salt spray tests are carried out.
The tests described in the DIN 50021 standard serve both to characterize the effectiveness of corrosion protection systems and to detect defects quickly.
The corrosive agent is an aqueous sodium chloride solution that is sprayed continuously using compressed air.
There are three different salt spray tests involved:
Salt spray test (SS test)
Acetic acid salt spray test (ASS test)
Copper accelerated acetic acid salt spray test (CASS test).
