What is Cyclic Corrosion Testing (CCT) and what is it used for?

This reliable testing method is invaluable to a huge range of modern industries, including everything from automotive manufacture, to aerospace, military and offshore industries, as well as paint, plastics, packaging and electronics. 

Cyclic corrosion testing explained

CCT is a way of accelerating the kind of corrosion failures that can easily take place in real world conditions. This makes it possible to test the suitability of a variety of samples and coatings in a drastically reduced timeframe by exposing the test subjects to a variety of different conditions.  

How does Cyclic corrosion testing work?

Cyclic corrosion testing makes use of an enclosed chamber that’s capable of simulating and accentuating a wide range of environmental states.  

Atmospheric exposures tend to feature both wet and dry conditions and CCT testing machines are capable of cycling through differing conditions as a way of replicating the kind of real-life situations that occur outdoors. These testing solutions can typically test for a number of corrosion mechanisms, including from the general to the galvanic and including crevice corrosion. 

Meeting CCT industry standards

There are a number of industry standards associated with cyclic corrosion testing, allowing you to ensure that you’re carrying out the most reliable and widely accepted tests. These include: 

  • ASTM B117 this salt spray test is used to produce relative corrosion resistance information for metals and coated metals. CCT testing can adhere to the standards for salt spray testing among others.   
  • ISO 7253 is a method for working out the resistance of coatings to neutral salt spray and is an internationally recognised standard.  
  • ISO 9227 is a global standard for corrosion testing that is applied when environmental conditions are artificially created using a test cabinet such as a CCT cabinet.
