FAQs

  • The ISO 8501 guides are visual reference books used by coating inspectors, protective coating applicators, surface preparation specialists and QC teams to visually assess the surface cleanliness of steel before coating. They pair the written descriptions in the ISO 8501 standard with high-quality color photographs showing what each rust grade and preparation grade actually looks like – so an inspector on a bridge, a shipyard or a heavy-industry site can compare a prepared steel surface directly against the reference photos and assign a grade with confidence. Used across construction, marine, offshore, oil and gas, and any sector where protective coatings are applied over prepared steel substrates.

  • The standard document from ISO defines the grades in words. The TQC Sheen guides show what each grade looks like in high-quality color photographs across multiple substrate examples – so inspectors, applicators and QC operators making real-time visual assessments on site can compare a prepared surface directly against a reference image rather than interpreting a written description alone. Most working practitioners find the guides essential for consistent grade assignment between operators and between sites – the standard document alone is not designed for hand-held on-site use.

  • Individual guides are available for each part of ISO 8501. Part 1 (rust grades and preparation grades of uncoated steel substrates) is the most widely used – it visually classifies steel by initial rust grade (A, B, C, D) and by preparation grade after blast cleaning, hand and power tool cleaning, or flame cleaning (Sa, St, Fl grades). Other parts cover preparation grades after previous coatings have been removed, welds and edges with surface imperfections, and preparation grades in connection with water jetting. Confirm the specific part number and edition you need against your project specification before ordering.

  • The current TQC Sheen guide references ISO 8501-1:2007 (Edition 2), which remains the active published standard at time of writing and was last confirmed by ISO in 2017. A revision (Edition 3) is under development at ISO and will supersede the 2007 edition once published – specification teams working on long-term projects should track the ISO publication schedule. For Part 3 (welds and edges), the 2006 edition was replaced by ISO 8501-3:2025 (Edition 3) in August 2025. Confirm current guide stock with our support team before ordering if edition tracking is critical to your project.

  • ISO 8501-1:2007 itself is published by ISO as a hardback A5-format book in four languages (English, French, German and Swedish) so all grade descriptions and photograph captions are readable across those language markets. The TQC Sheen guide follows the same format. For channel partner and distributor use across other language regions, contact our support team to confirm current translated editions and availability – the visual photograph reference works regardless of the reader’s primary language.
