Built from stainless steel with dimensions of 100 x 55 mm, it combines four core paint inspection checks in a single instrument: cross cut adhesion testing to international standards, wet film thickness measurement, edge rounding verification, and coating viscosity assessment via a leveling test.

Cross cut adhesion tests are supported at 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm grid spacings covering coating thicknesses from thin films through 250 µm. Both standard cross-cut and St. Andrew’s cross adhesion test patterns are supported. The wet film applicator ranges from 0 to 180 µm, the edge rounding check covers R2 to R5 profiles, and the wet film thickness gauge measures from 50 to 160 µm. The instrument is included in the TQC Sheen Basic Inspection Kit as one of the essential paint QC components.

The Master Paint Plate Multitester is made from stainless steel and features a viscosity indicator and a wet-film applicator. On the corners there’s an edge grinder to carry out edge-rounding checks. At the bottom we’ve included a wet film applicator ranging from 0 to 180 µm, while the top edge provides a leveling test, to indicate the viscosity of a coating.

The Multitester combines four core coating QC inspections in a single portable stainless steel tool. First: cross cut adhesion testing at four grid spacings (1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm) supporting both standard cross-cut and St. Andrew’s cross patterns. Second: wet film applicator ranging from 0 to 180 µm for applying coating samples at a controlled thickness. Third: edge rounding check with R2, R3, R4 and R5 corners for verifying substrate edge preparation before coating. Fourth: coating viscosity leveling test on the top edge for indicating coating flow behavior. One tool for four inspection steps – simplifies the QC bench and reduces onboarding time for new inspectors.
Three international standards are supported. ISO 2409 (Paints and varnishes – Cross-cut test) is the European standard. ASTM D3359 (Standard Test Methods for Rating Adhesion by Tape Test) is the American standard. GOST 15140 (Paintwork materials – Methods for determination of adhesion) is the Russian standard. Coating manufacturers exporting across regions typically need to test to more than one standard – the Multitester covers all three in a single tool.
Grid spacing depends on your coating thickness. General guidance from ISO 2409: 1 mm spacing for coatings up to 60 µm on hard substrates; 1.5 mm or 2 mm spacing for coatings 61-120 µm on hard substrates; 3 mm spacing for coatings 121-250 µm and for softer substrates. The 1.5 mm grid on the Master Paint Plate Multitester covers the transitional coating thickness range where a 1 mm grid gets crowded and a 2 mm grid is coarse. Consult the specific standard you test to (ISO 2409, ASTM D3359 or GOST 15140) for the exact grid selection rules. For coating thicknesses above 250 µm, the TQC Sheen Cross Cut Adhesion Test Kit CC3000 with adjustable depth is more suitable than the manual Multitester.
The 2003 edition superseded the 1999 edition of ISO 2409 and is the currently active version. Order TQC Sheen Tape for Adhesion Test (ISO 2409 2003) for new QC workflows and any lab still using the 1999 edition should plan a transition to the 2003 tape. The TQC Sheen Tape for Adhesion Test (ISO 2409 1999) is fiber-reinforced and remains available for laboratories running legacy protocols that still specify the 1999 edition.
