Brought to you by TQC Sheen, our specialist paint testing brand, the AFA compact automatic film applicator is suitable for both wire bar and block applicators.
Our versatile film applicator machine is suitable for charts up to A4 size and the application speed can be set from one to 150 mm/s. Controlled drawdowns help you prepare comparable samples for laboratory testing. Plus it can be equipped with an interchangeable glass or perforated vacuum bed.
The TQC Sheen automatic film applicator helps control variations in speed, pressure and direction during drawdowns, improving consistency between samples.
Film thickness also depends on the coating, substrate and application tool, so use a consistent setup when comparing samples.
When researching a sample’s appearance properties, the quality of the applied film is important. If you’re preparing samples for testing abrasion resistance, hiding power or gloss, controlled film application helps you compare coating performance on a consistent basis.
All of our automatic film applicators can be used in combination with either standard block type film applicators such as Bird and Baker models, or spiral bar type film applicators (wire wound rod type). We also make multiple types of applicators for either glass, paper or metal substrates and foils.
It’s so easy to start up our film applicator machines and set the right application speed. With a flick of a switch the AFA Compact is ready for action. The automatic internal calibration kicks in and you can set the speed on the easy-to-read digital display. When you’re ready to apply your paint – just press start!
Our film applicator machine is simple and mess free to use, whether you’re working with the glass bed or vacuum bed option. Both are designed for minimal waste. We recommend you use a piece of paper to collect any surplus paint as shown in the user manual, but you can also use the easy-clean drip pans our film applicators come with.
The TQC Sheen automatic film applicator is designed for controlled film preparation in line with ASTM D823.
Across the Industrial Physics portfolio we have plenty of automatic film applicators, simple film applicators and accessories dependent on your budget.
On this page you’re looking at the compact model of our TQC Sheen automatic film applicator, but also be sure to check out the standard version we make as well.

Choose a glass bed with a clamp to hold your test chart, or a vacuum bed that holds it flat using a suitable vacuum source. Share your substrate material, dimensions and intended coating thickness so we can discuss the appropriate bed and application tool.
The AB3652 base unit is supplied with a 24 V adapter, paper holder, drip pan, 500 g weight and manual. A glass or vacuum bed must also be ordered. Application tools and vacuum pumps are listed separately as optional accessories; tell us if you already have either so we can help check compatibility.
Use Request a Quote to discuss a complete setup, or Make an Inquiry if you need help choosing. Include the samples you work with, your test method and any existing applicator or vacuum equipment. If you are unsure of the configuration, describe your application and the questions you need help with.
Our team will review your enquiry and contact you to discuss your requirements. Before ordering, ask us to confirm the items included in your quotation, any additional accessories and the expected delivery arrangements for your location.

The AFA Compact applies paint and coating films to test charts, panels or foils in a controlled, repeatable way for laboratory sample preparation. It is suitable for preparing samples ahead of testing for gloss, hiding power and abrasion resistance, and accepts charts up to A4 size with application speeds from 1 to 150 mm/s.
The AFA Compact is designed for use in line with ASTM D823, the standard for applying uniform films of paint to test panels using mechanical film applicators.
The AFA Compact is compatible with standard block-type film applicators including Bird and Baker models, and spiral bar applicators. It accepts applicators up to 40 mm in height, and spiral bars with a minimum length of 220 mm and a diameter of 6-12.7 mm. Application tools are ordered separately.
The AFA Compact can be equipped with either a glass bed with a clamp or a perforated vacuum bed. The vacuum bed requires a vacuum source connected via a 6 mm quick-connect fitting (minimum -100 mbar). A bed is not included with the base unit and must be ordered separately. Contact our team to discuss which option suits your substrate and application.
The AB3652 base unit is supplied with a 24 V adapter, paper holder, drip pan, 500 g weight and user manual. A glass or vacuum bed, application tools and a vacuum pump (if using the vacuum bed) must be ordered separately. Contact our team before ordering if you need help confirming the right configuration for your substrate and coating type.
