Brought to you by TQC Sheen, our specialist paint testing brand, this Baker Film Applicator is designed to support the most demanding of tests required by coating and paint production laboratories.

Versatile Baker film applicators

Our Baker applicators are available in film widths of 60mm80mm, 100mm and 150mm and gap depths of 15 to 200 µm. They’re suitable for applying a host of different products onto flat and relatively solid substrates.

Reproducible film applicator results

The TQC Sheen Baker applicator when used with an automatic film applicator, smooths over any drawdown problems caused by variations in speed, pressure and direction. It even ensures that the results are protected from influence by the shear rate or weight of the applicator.

All of this means that you can enjoy confidence that your film thickness is even over an entire surface and the samples created with our automatic film applicators are reproducible. Plus you can quickly produce a large number of identical laboratory precision draw downs.

Film applicator forming properties

When researching a sample’s appearance properties, the quality of the applied film is important. If you’re preparing samples for testing abrasion resistance, hiding power or gloss then you’ll love our Baker film applicator! Whatever the test, our devices will keep any variation risks from rheological properties, application speed or pressure to a minimum.

Quality film applicator performance – as standard

The TQC Baker automatic film applicator is designed to perform to the highest caliber of international paint testing standards including ASTM D3022 and ASTM D823.

Guaranteed performance

Each Baker film applicator comes with a protective plastic case and a calibration certificate.

Easy to use

It’s really easy to obtain reliable results from our Baker film applicator.

First you take your substrateselect the appropriate film applicator and place it all on a plane, smooth surface, such as a glass plate. Next up you apply a sample of paint in the center of the Baker film applicator.

Now, simply draw down the baker applicator over the surface.

Keep in mind that due to physical reasons the attainable wet film thickness is not equal to the gap depth, and the thickness can vary from 40% to 80% of the gap depthAlso notice that the dry film thickness is lower than the wet film thickness due to the solvent evaporation.

Film applicator options

Across the Industrial Physics portfolio we make lots of different types of automatic film applicators.

Some of the other options to evaluate include our TQC Sheen Bird-type four-sided film applicators. Then there’s the popular TQC Sheen Automatic Film Applicator, which we also make a compact version of.  TQC Sheen also offers a range of laminated test charts from A6 to A4 in size and with different patterns to suit your needs.

Applying our film applicator experience

We’ve been in the business of manufacturing film applicators for many decades now. Over the years we’ve learned lots of best practice and we’re always pleased to share this with our customers.
