Introducing ASTM D823 – Industrial Physics

ASTM D823 is a global ASTM test method that was designed to confirm the uniform thickness of paints and coatings applied to sample test panels.

This ASTM thickness testing approach was created for coatings that have been designed to be sprayed in the factory or in the field. ASTM D823 is a particularly important test when you need to evaluate the gloss and color appearance of metallic coatings.

You may find that coatings applied following the ASTM D823 thickness test method may exhibit a slight orange-peel or spray wave.

Five uniform thickness testing practices

ASTM D823 covers the following five uniform thickness testing practices for preparing films of uniform thickness for coatings on test panels:

  • Practice A: automated spray machine application
  • Practice B: motor-driven dip coater application
  • Practice C: motor-driven blade film application
  • Practice D: hand-held spray gun application
  • Practice E: hand-held blade film application.
