The optical value created by the brightness of a paper, pulp, tissue or paperboard sample can have a massive impact on how visually appealing it is to a consumer. This means that the brightness is a key quality determiner that should be considered as part of a paper testing QA process.  

When it comes to paper and pulp. brightness is a way of describing the numerical value of the reflectance factor of a sample with respect to blue light of specific spectral and geometric characteristics. This lets you know how bright the sample will appear to the human eye. Paper brightness is related to how white it appears, but the two are not the same.
