TAPPI T525 is a TAPPI international testing method to determine the diffuse brightness of paper, paperboard and pulp.
This TAPPI brightness test of paper offers you a simple single-number index for measuring the brightness of white, near-white, and naturally colored samples. This includes all naturally-colored pulps, and papers and boards made from them.
TAPPI T525 brightness testing isn’t suitable for colored papers. This includes paper or paperboard that contains added coloring matter such as yellow or green dyestuff. That’s because these additives absorb light in the part of the spectrum extending from about 400 to 500 nm.
If you’d like to compare colored materials, then be sure to check out TAPPI T524 ‘Color of Paper and Paperboard (45/0 Geometry)’ and TAPPI T527 ‘Color of Paper and Paperboard (d/0 Geometry)’.
Brightness is a commonly used term to define the numerical value of the reflectance factor of a sample with regards to its blue light of specific spectral and geometric characteristics. To carry out a TAPPI T525 brightness test you’ll need a brightness tester that employs diffuse illumination and 0° viewing geometry.
Diffuse reflectance is measured within the wavelength range of 400-520 nm with an effective wavelength of 457 nm.
To measure diffuse reflectance you’ll need a suitable filtering device that will modify the spectral response and an instrument with diffuse illumination and perpendicular observation geometry. The diffuse reflectance measurements you note are made in terms of absolute reflectance factors.
