There are many different types of paperboard found in flexible packaging products and several types of paper testing equipment used to inspect them.
You can make flexible packaging from paperboard boxes with sheets of recycled paper or the fibrous material in wood. Other flexible packaging products that use paperboard include foil sealed bags and rigid, laminated boxes.
In order to ensure that the paperboard samples you use provide an adequate level of protection for a particular task you’ll need to carry out a series of paper tests.
The good news is – if you use paperboard in your flexible packaging, our paper test devices and accessories will tell you all you need to know about its properties: from friction testing and strength testing, through to printability and bending stiffness inspection.
Optical properties are important to the manufacturer, vendor and user of paperboard as they change the look and feel of the finished flexible packaging product.
It’s not only true for the paperboard itself, but also its conversion. If you were to increase the gloss by varnishing the highlights of a selected area – like a company logo for example – this can add some extra shelf appeal by making it stand out from the background. Optical properties relate to all aspects of the flexible packaging’s appearance – everything from brightness to whiteness, color, opacity and gloss.
It’s so interesting to note that we wrote a whitepaper on the subject – find out more here: Optical Testing Application Information for Paper and Paperboard
If you use paperboard for your flexible packaging, you’ll need a paper test that will determine its resistance to wet and dry abrasion. Our abrasion testing inspection machines accurately measure the resistance of your flexible packaging – giving you a clear picture of their aggregate toughness and response to abrasion. This paper test will give you accurate information on how your materials will stand the test-of-time when crushed or left to degrade and disintegrate.
A paperboard’s structural properties can be affected by different atmospheric conditions and moisture changes. These changes are common with flexible packaging materials when moving from the paper machine, to the laboratory and then the customer’s end use conditions.
We make a number of reliable machines that will tell you all you need to know about how your flexible packaging products will respond to ambient changes. Take a look at some of the paper test instruments we manufacture and learn more about the process in the blog we have published here.
We’ve detailed just some of the many testing solutions we offer. With decades of paper testing experience of flexible packaging containing paperboard, across a wide range of industries, we offer a “one stop shop” for all your inspection needs.
