Paperboard Testing

There are many different types of paperboard found in flexible packaging products and several types of paper testing equipment used to inspect them.  

You can make flexible packaging from paperboard boxes with sheets of recycled paper or the fibrous material in wood. Other flexible packaging products that use paperboard include foil sealed bags and rigid, laminated boxes. 

In order to ensure that the paperboard samples you use provide an adequate level of protection for a particular task you’ll need to carry out a series of paper tests.

Optical properties are important to the manufacturer, vendor and user of paperboard as they change the look and feel of the finished flexible packaging product.  

It’s not only true for the paperboard itself, but also its conversion. If you were to increase the gloss by varnishing the highlights of a selected area – like a company logo for example – this can add some extra shelf appeal by making it stand out from the background. Optical properties relate to all aspects of the flexible packaging’s appearance – everything from brightness to whiteness, color, opacity and gloss.

If you use paperboard for your flexible packaging, you’ll need a paper test that will determine its resistance to wet and dry abrasion.
