Standards
ISO 12625-9 is an international ISO standard that’s used to determine the resistance of tissue paper and tissue products to mechanical penetration.
The International Organization of Standards (ISO) produces a wide range of ISO standards to guide manufacturers, production lines and laboratories when checking the integrity of packaging, products, and materials across many industries.
This ISO standard approach uses a ball burst strength testing method to simulate the penetration of a sheet of tissue paper by a solid object. It’s a useful tissue test for manufacturers of tissues and their customers to understand how the products will respond to real world conditions.
To perform an ISO 12625-9 ball burst test, first your tissue sample is clamped horizontally between two plates. Each of these plates has a central circular aperture.
The center of the sample is penetrated by a polished ball at a constant rate. You can identify and record forces as low as one newton with the right tissue burst tester.
Using a 100N load cell, even forces below one newton can be recorded with the required accuracy. This allows reliable results to be obtained in research and development studies, with accurate recording of measured values far outside the usual range of 5 to 20 newtons.
The ISO 12625-9 ball burst test reveals the maximum force – known as the burst force. It will also give you information about the force withstood in terms of mass per unit area.
Burst testing is an important tissue paper test, but what is it? In essence, it’s a catch-all term that can refer to lots of different testing techniques. You might also hear it referred to as rupture testing – and you can find out more about burst and rupture testing in our guide.
ISO burst testing solutions give you an accurate picture of how your tissue papers will react to the demands placed on them. Quick and convenient burst strength testing methods that can fit right into your QA process.
Across the Industrial Physics family of brands, we make a large number of inspection devices to carry out a wide range of tissue testing types. If you’d like to find out more then click here.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 12625-9 testing?
Made by our specialist brand Testing Machines Inc, our tissue ball burst tester is a precision testing instrument which automatically determines the burst strength of your tissue paper samples.
All of your favorite testing parameters: test speed, peak burst strength; they’re all there and selectable with an easy-to-use software program. The system incorporates high resolution, low-capacity load cells with accuracies better than +/-0.5% down to 1/1000th of the load cell capacity for accuracy and simplicity of operation.
While undertaking tissue paper testing you can set parameters such as test speed and peak burst strength. In addition to tissue burst, other force measurements such as tensile or compression strength can be performed with the proper testing grips and fixtures.
The machine was specifically developed for burst testing to ISO 12625-9, TAPPI T-570, ISO 13938-1 and ISO 12625-11.
Universal Testing Machine (UTM)
Our industry-leading UTMs are just the job for ISO 12625-9 testing. They give you unparalleled control over your tissue paper testing.
These popular, software-controlled devices come in a variety of models – from our 5 kN (550 lbf) table model system, up to our 2,000 kN (450,000 lbf) servo-hydraulic system. We will help you to meet and exceed international ISO standard requirements for a wide range of products and tissue testing scenarios.
