Introducing DIN 51221-1 – Industrial Physics

DIN 51221-1 is a national tensile testing standard that was established to help you to determine the mechanical properties of tensile testing machines.  

DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.), a German standardization body, has developed the use, rules, guidelines and characteristics of around 30,000 standards. 

What is tensile strength testing?

Tensile testing gives you the lowdown on the strength and capacity for elongation of the material being tested. It’s a very important step in the QA process, because it returns such a wealth of data. If you want to know that your finished product is fit for purpose and will be able to cope with the rigors of real-world applications, tensile testing is a must. 

Tensile strength testing involves pulling a sample apart until it fails and then measuring the amount of effort involved – the tensile strength of the sample. It’s a broad term that refers to all types of force and materials strength testing applications that follow this process. Tensile strength testing can be carried out on materials including corrugated paper, paper, plastics and polymers. 

Performing tension tests to identify the point of failure across your chosen sample is critical when assuring the integrity of your material. And luckily, we know a thing or two about this widely popular test method of strength testing.
