Why is tensile testing important?

Why is tensile testing important?

Tensile testing gives you the lowdown on the strength and capacity for elongation of the material being tested. It’s a very important step in the QA process, because it returns such a wealth of data. If you want to know that your finished product is fit for purpose and will be able to cope with the rigors of real-world applications, tensile testing is a must.

When tensile testing really counts

Tensile testing has its place in a huge number of industries, from aerospace to medical equipment or paper packaging. It can be used to check everything from the strength and flexibility of a car seat belt to the integrity of the joint strength of respiratory masks and IV connector fittings. In packaging, it is used to measure the elongation of materials like paper and board, as well as the maximum load they can take before failure.

It is one of the most versatile testing options available and should be part of virtually every QA process. Tensile testing can also be used to as a way for the metal industry to discover and analyze new alloys – opening up new and improved materials for all sorts of applications.

Industry standards for tensile testing

There are several widely accepted testing methods and processes that allow you to test your materials to a set of recognized standards. Check out our handy guide to see tensile strength testing standards.

Types of tensile testing

There are a wide variety of different types of tensile tests, including:

  • Creep
  • Shear
  • Adhesion
  • Peel
  • Tear resistance

Tensile testing machines at Industrial Physics

By working with the experts at United Testing Systems and Testing Machines Inc, we have a versatile selection of tensile testing machines to suit a huge range of industries and applications. Some of our most popular models include:

DSTM 20 kN Table Top UTM

This compact Universal Testing Machine is capable of everything from basic tension and compression testing to advanced materials testing. It can handle loads of up to up to 20kN (4,500 lbf.) and can be used in all sorts of industries, from flexible packaging to education or electronics. If you’re looking for an easy to use machine that can test many different materials, the United’s DSTM 20 kN Table Top UTM is a great choice. Other load sizes are also available.

DHFM Floor Models

When you need greater force for your tensile testing, the servo-hydraulic driven UTMs from United have got you covered. Available in 300kN, 600kN, 1000kN and 2000kN capacities, it can carry out tensile testing on composites, metals, and steels. It’s ideal for industries where maximum force testing is crucial. The software makes getting results easy, check out United’s DHFM floor models for more.

Universal Testing Machine – UTM-1

Testing Machines Inc offer a Universal Testing Machine that can be programmed with up to 100 different test methods, including tensile testing. Suitable for testing foam, plastics, rubber and textiles, it is perfect for flexible packaging markets and can be customized to suit your needs. Find out more about TMI’s UTM.
