ISO 7253 was an ISO international salt spray test that’s used for corrosion testing in artificial atmospheres.
The International Organization of Standards (ISO) produce a wide range of ISO standards to guide manufacturers, production lines and laboratories when checking the integrity of packaging, products, and materials across many industries. The ISO 7253 testing standard was withdrawn and has now been replaced by ISO 9227.
The ISO 7253 salt spray testing standard specifies the apparatus, the reagents and the procedure to be used in conducting neutral salt spray (NSS), acetic acid salt spray (AASS) and copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) tests to assess the corrosion resistance of metallic materials, with or without permanent or temporary corrosion protection. To perform these salt spray tests successfully to ISO 7253 testing standards you should invest in a suitable cyclic corrosion test chamber (CCT).
The ISO 7253 corrosion testing standard also describes the method employed to evaluate the corrosivity of the test-cabinet environment. These salt spray tests are particularly useful for detecting discontinuities, such as pores and other defects, in certain metallic, organic, anodic oxide and conversion coatings.

The acetic acid salt spray test (AASS) is especially useful for testing decorative coatings of copper + nickel + chromium, or nickel + chromium. It’s also been found suitable for testing anodic and organic coatings on aluminum.
The copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray test (CASS) is great for testing decorative coatings of copper + nickel + chromium, or nickel + chromium. It’s also been found suitable for testing anodic and organic coatings on aluminum.
The salt spray testing methods are all suitable for checking that the quality of a metallic material, with or without corrosion protection, is maintained. They’re not intended to be used for comparative testing as a means of ranking different materials relative to each other with respect to corrosion resistance, or as means of predicting long-term corrosion resistance of the tested material.
