Introducing GOST R 51694 – Industrial Physics

GOST R 51694 is a GOST paint testing standard to determine the film thickness of paints and varnishes.

The GOST series of international technical standards is maintained by the Euro-Asian Council for Standardization, Metrology and Certification (EASC). This is a regional standards organization operating under the auspices of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

The importance of coating thickness testing

A paint’s thickness plays a key role in determining the performance, appearance and application of paints. It can also determine whether a coating meets industry standards, which is why you should test your paints and understand their properties.

Paint thickness can be evaluated in two states: wet film thickness and dry film thickness. As you likely grasped from the names – one is measured before the paint has dried and the other is the paint’s thickness after the solvent has evaporated and the paint has dried.

There are coating thickness gauges available for both wet film thickness and dry film thickness. A coating thickness gauge is designed to measure how thick a coating is. Different types of gauges use different methods to determine the same result, ranging from simple handheld options to more advanced machines for complex measurements.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your GOST R 51694 coating thickness testing?

TQC Sheen Coating Thickness Gauge for All Substrates
The Defelsko Positector 200 measures non-destructively a wide variety of applications using proven ultrasound technology. Measures coating thickness over wood, concrete, plastics, composites and more. Advanced models measure up to 3 individual layer thicknesses in a multi-layer system and feature a graphic readout for detailed analysis of the coating system.

TQC Sheen FE,NFE Coating Thickness Gauge
This handy, robust and easy to use TQC coating thickness gauge is ideal for measurement tasks in various industries and paint applications.

It is a compact meter that allows measurement of painted objects, or other corrosion protective layer thicknesses, with accuracy measured in both Fe (iron or steel) and NFe (aluminum, copper, brass or non-magnetic steel).

TQC Sheen Film Thickness Gauge FTG2000
The TQC Film Thickness Gauge FTG2000 is a reliable film and foil thickness gauge that has been especially developed for measuring so-called “replica tapes” as Testex®, used mainly to measure the surface profile. It offers high precision measurements in the 0-1000 Micron range and has an accuracy of +/- 5 Micron.
