Introducing TAPPI T275 – Industrial Physics

TAPPI T275 is a TAPPI international testing standard that’s designed to separate contaminants in recycled fiber from pulp fibers for subsequent examination and quantification.

This TAPPI paper testing approach will detect anything from shives in mechanical pulp, macro stickies, plastics, sand, metal pieces or flakes. Screen plates of various slit widths such as 0.10 mm, 0.15 mm, 0.20 mm, and 0.25 mm are used in the separation process.

The TAPP T 275 pulp testing method involves using a screening device called a Somerville screen. The separation of your sample material is based on the size difference between the fibers and the contaminants. However, depending on their flexibility and geometry, not all of the larger contaminants can be captured by the screen.

What is a Somerville Screen?

The Somerville Screen is a Somerville-style pulp screener designed to ensure that no fiber useful for papermaking is included in the shive content. It also checks that no significant fiber bundles are present in the accepted stock.

Although originally designed for determining shive in groundwood pulps, the Somerville Screen test can be performed on many types of mechanical and chemical pulps.

Reasons to choose a Somerville Screen test?

The types of contaminants that the Somerville screen test searches for can adversely affect paper machine operation and downgrade the quality of the final product. So it’s important to understand them through qualitative and quantitative measurements.

The TAPPI T 275  pulp testing method provides a way to isolate the contaminants for the purposes of qualification and quantification. When you know the contaminants you’re dealing with you can best evaluate the effectiveness of a process or a piece of equipment, as well as the final product quality.
