ISO 4593:1993

Introducing ISO 4593:1993 - Industrial Physics

ISO 4593:1993 is a global ISO testing standard for thickness testing of plastic films and sheeting using a mechanical scanning device, such as a digital micrometer.

At Industrial Physics we make thickness testing devices for all types of applications and for many different industries. This includes a range of different digital micrometer equipment.

We make thickness testing devices to inspect the average thickness of a sample and the yield of a roll using gravimetric thickness testing techniques. The ISO 4593:1993 thickness test is accurate and adaptable, but it’s not possible to test embossed films or sheeting.

ISO 4593:1993 thickness test reporting

To carry out a successful 4593:1993 thickness test, first up you’ll need a suitable measuring device such as a digital micrometer. You’ll need to create and work with defect and crease free sample strips about 100mm wide.

To prepare a complete a ISO 4593:1993 thickness testing report you’ll need to include the following information as a minimum:

a) Full identification of the thickness test sample

b) Type of measuring faces and the load and length of the sample

c) Number of test strips

d) The arithmetic mean of the individual measurements

e) Total number of measurements made

ISO 4593:1993 thickness testing apparatus

To carry out a successful ISO 4593:1993 thickness test you’ll need the following kit:

Thickness-measuring device: capable of measuring to the following accuracies:

  • Up to and including 100 Pm to an accuracy of 1 Pm
  • Above 100 Pm and up to and including 250 Pm to an accuracy of 2 Pm
  • Above 250 Pm to an accuracy of 3 Pm

Test specimens: cut your thickness testing samples approximately 100 mm wide, across the whole width of the sample.

ISO 4593:1993 thickness testing report

A successful ISO 4593:1993 test report needs to include the following information:

  • The types of measuring face used and the force applied.
  • The length of the thickness test specimens
  • The number of thickness test specimens measured
  • The arithmetic mean of the individual measurements, reported as the average mechanically measured thickness of the specimens
  • The total number of thickness test measurements made with the standard deviation

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 4593:1993 thickness testing?

Testing Machines Inc. Digital Micrometer 49-86

The Digital Micrometer 49-86 quickly and precisely measures the thickness and caliper of most sheet materials - from paper, fabric and films to plastic, metal and leather.

Messmer Büchel – Digital Micrometer 49-56

With the Digital Micrometer 49-56 from Messmer Büchel you’ll achieve accurate thickness testing of a wide range of sheet-like substrates even at low pressures. Our popular digital micrometer complies to the most demanding of international standards.

We’ve learnt a thing or two about thickness testing over the decades. Now Industrial Physics is recognized as a brand that likes to bring new, innovative thickness testing equipment, including digital micrometers to market.

We like to share our knowledge and we’re here to help you to answer your questions about thickness testing. Across the knowledgebase section of our website we publish lots of blogs on related subjects.

When thickness testing plastic packaging films, how do you know what specifications to use for the pressure foot and diameter of the measuring foot? Our article on the thickness testing of plastic packaging films provides some answers to this question.
