Introducing ISO 2884-3 – Industrial Physics 

ISO 2884-3 is an international ISO test for the viscosity testing of paints and varnishes using a rotary viscometer. 

The International Organization of Standards (ISO) produce a wide range of ISO standards to guide manufacturers, production lines and laboratories when checking the integrity of packaging, products, and materials across many industries.  

The higher the viscosity of a fluid, the more it will resist flow. And when you move two fluid layers against one another you create friction: known as flow resistance. By measuring this resistance, it is possible to calculate the sample’s viscosity. 

The ISO 2884-3 helps you to determine the viscosity at a high rate of shear of paints, varnishes and related products at a rate of shear not less than 5,000 s -1 and not higher than 20,000 s -1. The ISO 2884-3 viscosity test needs to take place at a closely controlled temperature.

To carry out your ISO 2884-3 viscosity test successfully you’ll need a cone and plate, or concentric cylinder viscometer. It needs to operate at a rate of shear in the range of 5,000 to 20,000.  

The ISO 2884-3 viscosity test calls for a controlled environment to enable precise results. The tests should be carried out using the same apparatus, shortly after one another in the same laboratory. You shouldn’t see a difference of more than five percent of their mean.

Proper temperature control during the testing process is essential and it’s important that the temperature doesn’t change during the test. To check the temperature control, you’ll need to use refined mineral oil of the highest viscosity. You’ll need to allow the viscometer to run with this oil for five minutes, after which the reading shouldn’t have decreased by more than 30%. 

 If the decrease is more than 10%, the apparatus then this means that your apparatus isn’t suitable for the ISO 2884-3 compliant conditions required to determine the viscosity.
