ISO 13938-1:2019 is a global standard to determine the bursting properties of fabrics using a hydraulic method.

The method is applicable to knitted, woven, nonwoven and laminated fabrics and it’s also suitable for test specimens in the conditioned or wet state.

Through the ISO 13938-1:2019 process, a hydraulic pressure is applied using a constant rate of pumping device.

You clamp your test specimen over an expansive diaphragm using a circular clamping ring. Next up - apply increasing air pressure to the underside of the diaphragm. This will cause distension of the diaphragm and the fabric itself.

Next for ISO 13938-1:2019 testing, the pressure is increased smoothly until the test specimen bursts. From here you can determine the bursting strength and the bursting distension.

The available data doesn’t show much significant difference in the bursting strength results achieved using hydraulic or pneumatic burst testers, for pressures up to 800 kPa. This is a  pressure range that covers most performance levels expected of general apparel. If you’re using specialty textiles that need high bursting pressures, the hydraulic apparatus is more appropriate.

You should select samples in accordance with the ISO 13938-1:2019 method, by following a procedure laid down in the material specification for the fabric, or as otherwise agreed between the interested parties.

Suitable ISO 13938-1:2019 samples don’t contain folds or creases. They’re representative of the fabric as a whole and the system of clamping recommended typically negates the need to cut out test specimens.
