Introducing GOST 27890 – Industrial Physics

GOST 27890 is a GOST testing standard for inspecting decontaminable, protective paints and varnishes using the pull-off adhesion testing method. 

The GOST series of international technical standards is maintained by the Euro-Asian Council for Standardization, Metrology and Certification (EASC). This is a regional standards organization operating under the auspices of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). 

What is pull off adhesion testing?  

Pull-off adhesion testing is a useful paint testing method to measure the resistance of a coating to separation from a substrate, when a perpendicular tensile force is applied. There’s a range of substrate materials that this type of paint adhesion test is usually performed on, including metals, plastics, concrete, wood and glass. 

The pull-off adhesion test typically involves a digital or manual pull-off adhesion testing machine with a dolly. 

GOST 27890 paint adhesion testing purpose

The GOST 27890 paint testing standard applies to decontaminated protective single-layer and multi-layer paint coatings with a thickness of up to 400 microns. It’s meant for paint adhesion testing of coatings that can be applied to metal substrates.  

This GOST testing standard provides a repeatable method to determine the adhesive strength of coatings by normal tearing. This is achieved by measuring the force required to tear off coatings in the direction perpendicular to its surface.
