Introducing DIN 53156 – Industrial Physics

DIN 53156 is a national cupping test standard that you can use to test the resistance properties of paints or varnishes

DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.), a German standardization body, has developed the use, rules, guidelines and characteristics of around 30,000 standards, including for paint testing.

The cupping test is performed to determine a coating’s ability to deform under stretching forces. It’s widely used in the metal manufacturing and paint industries and can be performed on metal sheets with various thicknesses.

The DIN 5315 testing standard follows the Erichsen cupping test method. It details the optical evaluation techniques to adopt in order to qualify your sample’s resistance characteristics both accurately and consistently.

The DIN 53156 cupping test approach

The DIN 53156 cupping test specifies an empirical test procedure for assessing the resistance of paint or varnish coatings to cracking and detachment from a metal substrate.  This cupping test recommends the use of a cupping tester which enables you to apply gradual deformation by indentation under standard conditions.

Industrial Physics cupping testers

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your DIN 53156 cupping tests?

TQC Sheen Automatic Cupping Tester
Use your TQC Sheen Automatic cupping tester to perform a cupping test on coated steel panels to define the resistance of paint, varnish or related products to cracking and/or detachment from a metal substrate.

The cupping tester offers a “pass / fail” approach to paint testing. For example, you can determine a specified depth or choose the minimum depth at which a coating fails by gradually increasing the indentation.
