Introducing ASTM D5895 – Industrial Physics

ASTM D5895 is a global ASTM testing method to evaluate the drying or curing of organic coatings during film formation using a drying tester.

This ASTM approach will enable you to determine the stages and drying characteristics of organic coatings using both ‘straight line’ and ‘circular mechanical drying-time’ recording devices.

Why is drying time testing important?

The drying times of a coating help you to determine when a freshly painted room, floor or stair may be put back to use. It can also show you when a coated package is ready to be handled and sent out. If you use a coating with slow drying then your painted item can pick up extra dirt, while moisture can also lead to a non-uniform appearance.

The ASTM D5895 test methods are used for drying testing and curing testing at various stages in the dry-film formation of organic coatings. It does this by recommending the best mechanical devices to compare types of coatings or ingredient changes.

ASTM D5895 will help you to evaluate the stages of drying in a quantitative manner. It’s highly recommended that you carry out the drying tests under controlled environmental conditions. These drying and curing tests also offer a method of determining the drying characteristics of coatings that cannot be shown within a standard eight hour working day.

Some key principles of drying time testing

When evaluating the drying characteristics of baking systems, a circular drying time device will help you to quantitatively determine the drying times of coatings at room temperature and elevated conditions. The maximum temperature you can work with is limited by the effect of temperature on the motor lubrication or structural components of the device.

The straight-line drying time devices we build enable you to quantitatively measure the drying times of coatings tested simultaneously using one recorder. ASTM D5895 is most useful for comparing the drying time behavior of similar coatings.

You may find that drying time measurements using mechanical drying time recorders may differ from those found using conventional methods, such as ASTM D1640 or ISO 9117-3.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM D5895 testing?

TQC Sheen drying time recorder
Our drying time recorder is a fully digitally controlled machine that defines the different stages in the drying process of paints and coatings.

This drying recorder follows the BK (Beck Koller) method. It’s an easy task for you to define the final result or check intermediate drying stages with the clear digital display and the intuitive interface.

It’s a reliable and highly accurate mechanical recorder that’s ideal for testing to ISO 9117-4, DIN EN 14022 and ASTM D5895 standards.

TQC Sheen applicator (stainless steel)

TQC Sheen drying time recorder option
Our drying time recorder tool is an optional extra that accompanies our TQC automatic film applicators. This device allows the user to accurately define the drying time of various types of coatings within the time range of one minute up to 48 hours.
