ISO 8502-3 is the international standard for assessing dust on steel surfaces prepared for painting, using the pressure-sensitive tape method. A defined length of adhesive tape is pressed onto the blast-cleaned surface, peeled off, and the dust adhering to the tape is compared visually against the standard’s reference photographs to grade the dust contamination level. The tape’s peel strength has to be at least 190N per meter width per the standard – too weak and it under-extracts dust; too strong and it damages the surface. The TQC Sheen Adhesive Tape is manufactured to that specification so results are directly comparable to the reference photographs and defensible under coating manufacturer warranty audit.

Peel strength is at least 190N per meter of tape width – the minimum called for by ISO 8502-3. Peel strength determines how much dust the tape lifts from the prepared surface: too weak and it under-extracts, giving falsely optimistic dust grade readings; too strong and it damages the substrate or lifts material that isn’t dust. The 190N/meter specification is what makes ISO 8502-3 results comparable across inspectors, sites and coating projects – regardless of who is doing the assessment, the same tape performs the same way.
ISO 8502-3 was developed specifically for blast-cleaned steel surfaces before painting – it references those substrates directly, and the reference photographs in the standard show dust levels on prepared steel. In practice the tape method can be used to assess dust on other substrates (aluminum, concrete, prepared composite surfaces), but the results are not comparable to the ISO 8502-3 reference photographs and cannot be reported as ISO 8502-3 compliant. If you need ISO-compliant dust assessment on non-steel substrates, consult the specific substrate’s coating specification for the recommended assessment method.
