ISO/FDIS 12625-3 is an international ISO standard that’s used to determine the thickness, bulking thickness, apparent bulk density and bulk of tissue paper and tissue products.
When tissue testing to this ISO standard a pressure of 2,0 kPa is applied. The ISO/FDIS 12625-3 standard was created for tissue paper testing only. If you’re looking for corresponding test methods for paper and board, you’ll find them through ISO 534.
So, what do these tissue paper testing terms actually mean?
Tissue paper thickness: paper thickness plays an important part in the look and feel of the final print result. Paper is measured in ‘microns’, a unit of measure used for gauging tissue paper thickness; one micron represents 1000th of a millimeter
Tissue paper apparent bulk density: the mass per unit volume of a bulk of a material, including the air voids between the particles, and inside the particles.
Tissue paper bulk: Bulk is a term used to indicate volume or thickness in relation to weight. It is the reciprocal of density (weight per unit volume)
Across the Industrial Physics family of brands we make a large number of inspection devices to carry out a wide range of tissue testing types. If you’d like to find out more then click here.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO/FDIS 12625-3 testing?
The popular 49-56 digital micrometer gives precise tissue paper thickness measurements. Whether you’re working with paper, plastic and plastic films or tissue paper, nonwovens, textiles and other sheet-like substrates.
It’s the tool for the job when your tissue paper materials must hit international standards, including ISO/FDIS 12625-3, ASTM, ISO, EDANA and more.
