TAPPI T810 is a TAPPI international testing standard for measuring the bursting strength of corrugated board using a disk shaped, molded diaphragm.
Bursting strength is the measure of the force required to puncture through (rupture) the corrugated board. This TAPPI burst test approach is for single wall and double wall corrugated boards with a bursting strength within the range of 690 kPa (100 psi) to 4825 kPa (700 psi).
If you need the bursting strength of paper with basis weights below 98 g/m2, use TAPPI T 403 ‘Bursting Strength of Paper.’ For corrugated combined boards, see TAPPI T 807 ‘Bursting Strength of Linerboard.’
There are minimum bursting strength requirements and regulations to meet if you want to ship your corrugated board packaging. The bursting strength test will help you to meet them by highlighting certain properties of the corrugated board samples you plan to use. It reveals information on the tensile and elongation properties of the linerboard that makes up the combined board.
The amount of fibers present in a sheet, the makeup of the internal bonds and even surface treatments are factors that can influence the result of a bursting strength test.
To perform a successful TAPPI T 810 bursting strength test you’ll need to clamp your board sample between two platens, with circular openings in their centers. The lower platen is fixed, the upper platen has an adjustable depth, but remains stationary through the test. An expansible diaphragm is distended through the lower platen by means of hydraulic pressure until the specimen bursts and your bursting strength test is finished. You’ll need to record the maximum hydraulic pressure when the specimen ruptures.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your TAPPI T810 bursting strength testing?
Messmer Buchel Burst Tester 13-56
Our burst tester is ideal for all sheet materials. Use it to test papers and paperboards, corrugated, polymer films and laminates, or textiles.
We provide different models customized for these applications to suit a range of pressure levels that offer more accurate results. You can use the 13-56 burst tester on any suitable sheet or film product within the pressure range of the instrument.
At Industrial Physics it’s our job to give you complete control of your burst testing! We’ve been designing and building burst testers for many years and we’ve learnt a thing or two about paper testing best practice along the way.
We share some of our expertise across the knowledgebase section of our website where you’ll find blogs like this one which explores how burst tests save lives! Or you could have a read of this piece about the regulations relating to burst testing of medical packages.
