Introducing TAPPI 262 – Industrial Physics

TAPPI 262 is a TAPPI industry standard used in the consistent preparation of mechanical pulps for testing.

TAPPI is the technical arm of the American Paper & Pulp Association (APPA), and it gathers and disseminates information concerning production matters.

The purpose of the TAPPI 262 pulp test is to remove latency (curl) from pulp fibers. It can be used with pressure groundwood, refiner mechanical, chemo-mechanical, thermomechanical, and chemo-thermomechanical pulps. It’s also good for pulp samples taken downstream of refiners – including screens, cleaners, and reject refiners.

How to remove pulp latency

In the production of mechanical pulps with refiners – or on grinding stones under pressure – a phenomenon referred to as “latency” is introduced into the pulp. The action of the refiner twists and rolls the fibers into balls or nodules of a highly strained state that are not removed by means of conventional disintegration.

When disintegration is done in cold water in accordance with TAPPI T 205 ‘Forming Handsheets for Physical Tests of Pulp,’ subsequent testing will not show the full development strength properties of the pulp.

Disintegrating the pulp at elevated temperatures and low consistency relaxes the fibers, removing the latency (fiber twists, rolls, and nodules). With hot disintegration, the pulp shows complete development of strength properties without further treatment.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your TAPPI 262 pulp testing?

Testing Machines Inc. Digital Hot Pulp Disintegrator 73-19
With hot disintegration, pulp shows complete development of strength properties without further treatment. Disintegration time is typically reduced from fifteen minutes to two minutes. Disintegrating pulp at elevated temperatures reduces latency by removing the stress that is found in fibers that have been disintegrated at lower temperatures.
