Introducing SCAN P46 – Industrial Physics

SCAN P46 is a testing standard that was developed to determine the compressive strength of paper and board using the short span compression (SCT) test.

Short-span compression testing (SCT) is a modern and cost-effective method of testing for corrugated paper testing research and development. As a method of corrugated paper testing, we’ve seen it increase in popularity in recent years. Now it’s taking over from some of the more traditional paper and corrugated paper crush tests and techniques such as the ring crush test or the linear crush test.

While compression testing is helpful for testing all sorts of materials, from concrete to ceramics, SCT testing is most commonly used to test paper, board, and corrugated materials like cardboard.

What’s involved in short span compression testing?

In SCT, a single piece of liner board or similar medium is inserted into pneumatic clamps that are precisely aligned to produce a sample-free length of only 0.70mm. The sample is then axially compressed until it reaches the point of failure, allowing you to measure how long the process takes.

What are the benefits of SCT?

So, what are the benefits of SCT over the other types of corrugated paper testing?

  • The efficient design means that there’s a shortened preparation time for each sample
  • The precisely calibrated clamps allow for extremely accurate measurement
  • The SCT offers excellent buckling stability and insight into the load-bearing fiber portion of the paper or board.
