Introducing SCAN P32 – Industrial Physics 

SCAN P32 is a flat crush testing (FCT) standard that was developed to measure the compressive strength of corrugated paper samples using a crush tester.  

Fiberboard shipping containers can face compressive forces during the manufacturing process, as well as during shipment or storage. These forces can compress the flute structure and reduce the structural integrity (stacking strength) of the corrugated material. It’s important to understand a container’s resistance to this type of crushing. Flat crush testing helps you to understand a container’s characteristics. 

Crush testing methods and standards were created to develop a common basis for communication between corrugated manufacturers and their customers. These inspection approaches are typically developed by industry and follow internationally recognized principles.  

What’s involved in a flat crush test? 

As one of the most common ways to test the peak load that materials like paper, board and corrugated cardboard can handle, flat crush testing is a key component of a solid corrugated QA process. 

To carry out a flat crush test you compress a single-flute corrugated board sample, loaded perpendicular to its surface under the crush tester’s platens. The compression force needed at the point of collapse is measured. 

The SCAN P32 flat crush testing standard is suitable for a wide variety of corrugated board samples.
