ISO 875 is an international ISO standard procedure used for the miscibility testing of essential oils in ethanol.
First things first, in case it’s a new one for you – miscibility testing enables you to understand the ability of two liquids to mix with each to form a homogeneous solution. This ISO standard of essential oil testing specifies a method for the evaluation of the miscibility of essential oils with various mixtures of ethanol and water.
The ISO 875 method involves gradually adding an essential oil to an ethanol solution of suitable concentration at a temperature of 20°C.
Within this ISO standard there are clear instructions on what to look for to determine whether an essential oil is indeed miscible with the ethanol solution after the two fluids have been mixed. Another feature of ISO 875 is that this essential oils miscibility test also offers guidance on how to accurately perform opalescence testing of your essential oils.
When performing the ISO 875 test you’ll need to ensure that you only use reagents of recognized analytical quality and distilled water. The ethanol itself should be 95% volume fraction, and the mixtures of ethanol and water are: 50%, 55%, 60%, 65%, 70%, 75%, 80%, 85% and 90%. Instructions are provided on how to prepare these mixtures properly for the ISO 875 test using an alcoholmeter, or a densimeter.
The ISO 875 standard for opalescence testing involves mixing a silver nitrate solution with a sodium chloride solution.
