ISO 8256 is a global ISO testing standard that’s used to determine the tensile impact strength of plastics under defined conditions using a pendulum impact tester.
ISO 8256 tensile strength impact testing specifies two methods. Following these methods you’ll investigate the behavior of your samples under specified impact velocities. You’ll be able to estimate their brittleness or the toughness within the limitations of the test conditions.
These plastic strength testing methods are applicable both to specimens prepared from molding materials. They’re also good for specimens taken from finished or semi-finished products (for example moldings, films, laminates, or extruded or cast sheets).
The tests can be described as tensile tests at relatively high strain rates. The ISO 8256 impact testing methods can be used for rigid materials, but are especially useful for materials too flexible or too thin to be tested with strength impact tests conforming to ISO 179 or tensile strength tests compliant with ISO 180.
Tensile strength testing involves pulling a sample apart until it fails and then measuring the amount of effort involved – the tensile strength of the sample. It’s a broad term that refers to all types of force and materials strength testing applications that follow this process.
