ISO 3035

Introducing ISO 3035 - Industrial Physics 

ISO 3035 is an ISO international crush testing method that’s used to determine the flat crush resistance of corrugated fibreboard.  

Fibreboard shipping containers can face compressive forces during the manufacturing process, as well as during shipment or storage. These forces can compress the flute structure and reduce the structural integrity (stacking strength) of the corrugated material. It’s important to understand a container’s resistance to this type of crushing. Flat crush testing helps you to understand a container’s characteristics. 

The ISO 3035 standard gives you a method to determine the flat crush resistance of corrugated fibreboard used in the manufacture of shipping containers. It’s applicable to single-faced and single-wall (double-faced) corrugated fibreboard. However, it’s not suitable for double-wall (double-double-faced) corrugated fibreboard. This is because the end-point of the test is not clearly defined or observable.

During an ISO 3035 crush test you subject your corrugated fibreboard sample to an increasing force applied perpendicularly to the surface by a compression tester. This compression crush tester should have two flat and parallel platens and the crush test continues until the fluting collapses. Next up, you divide the maximum force sustained by the test piece by the area. 

Common ISO 3035 crush testing definitions to know 

There are a few definitions within ISO 3035 that you’ll need to understand to perform a successful crush test, these include: 

Flat crush: maximum crushing force, applied perpendicular to the surface of the fluting structure, sustained before complete collapse of the structure 

Collapse: the point where the sidewalls of the flutes are no longer able to support load because they have suffered compression damage 

Flat crush resistance: the flat crush divided by the area of the test piece under the condition of test. Flat crush resistance is expressed in kilopascals.
