ISO 2960 is an ISO international testing method that will help you to determine the bursting strength and bursting distension of fabrics using what’s known as the diaphragm method.
But why is working out the bursting strength of packaging materials using burst testing important?
Understanding the strength and resistance of packaging and its component parts is a key role of quality control. These incisive tests typically use a bursting tester to simulate the pressures your products will encounter in the real world, to help you predict how they’ll perform.
Burst testing uses hydraulic pressurization on a focused area of your chosen sample, producing a ‘bubble’ which is pressurized to the point of burst failure. This bursting strength testing process produces a unique stress situation in the flat plane of the material.
The ISO 2960 bursting strength test is suitable for some woven fabrics that will be subjected to bursting pressures when in normal use. These include the likes of pump diaphragms or filter fabrics. This ISO bursting strength test may not be suitable for knitted materials or lace.
To carry out a successful ISO 2960 burst test you’ll need to clamp your sample over an elastic diaphragm using a flat annular clamping ring. Next up an increasing fluid – or gas – pressure is applied to the underside of the diaphragm until your sample bursts. You’ll find that your sample breaks across the direction having the bursting pressure.
You’ll need to understand a few key definitions in order to carry out a successful ISO 2960 burst test and these include:
Bursting strength: the maximum fluid pressure a woven fabric can be subjected to before your sample is distended to rupture.
Bursting distension: a measurement of the distension of a specimen at the point of rupture.
To carry out a successful ISO 2960 burst test you’ll need a precise bursting tester with a size specified flat base plate covered by a flat diaphragm of rubber or distension.
