Introducing ASTM D4400 – Industrial Physics  

ASTM D4400 is an international ASTM standard that’s used to measure the sag resistance of paints using a multinotch applicator. 

The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) is one of the most influential standard bodies in existence. Established in 1898, ASTM international exists to develop standardized test methods, specifications, practices, guides, classification, and terminology across a range of subject areas. 

The ASTM D4400 sag testing method covers the laboratory determination of the sag resistance of aqueous and nonaqueous liquid coatings at any level of sag resistance. 

What is sag resistance testing?

Evaluation of sag resistance is essential in quality control for both producers and purchasers of coatings. Practical application tests are poor in reproducibility, while viscometric methods can be time-consuming and lack the convincing aspect of actual sagging.  

The ASTM D4400 sag testing method provides simple and rapid tests, whereby sag resistance is demonstrated by a visible sag pattern. These tests are rated objectively in terms of numerical values that correlate with brushout test observations.
