Introducing ASTM D2412 – Industrial Physics

ASTM D2412 is a global ASTM test method that was designed to examine the external loading characteristics of plastic pipe by parallel-plate loading. 

The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) is one of the most influential standard bodies in existence. Established in 1898, ASTM international exists to develop standardized test methods, specifications, practices, guides, classification, and terminology across a range of subject areas. 

ASTM D2412 plastic pipe testing covers thermoplastic resin pipe, reinforced thermosetting resin pipe (RTRP), and reinforced polymer mortar pipe (RPMP). It enables you to determine pipe stiffness, stiffness factor, and load at specific deflections. 

What is ASTM D2412 pipe testing used for?

The external loading properties of plastic pipe obtained by the ASTM D2412 plastic pipe testing method are used for the following: 

• To determine the stiffness of the pipe – a function of the pipe dimensions and the physical properties of the material used 
• To determine the load-deflection characteristics and pipe stiffness for engineering design  
• To compare the characteristics of various plastics in pipe form 
• To study the interrelations of dimensions and deflection properties of plastic pipe and conduit 
• To measure the deflection and load-resistance at any of several significant events if they occur during the test.
