Tensile testing gives you the lowdown on the strength and capacity for elongation of the material being tested. It’s a very important step in the QA process, because it returns such a wealth of data. If you want to know that your finished product is fit for purpose and will be able to cope with the rigors of real-world applications, tensile testing is a must.
Tensile testing has its place in a huge number of industries, from aerospace to medical equipment or paper packaging. It can be used to check everything from the strength and flexibility of a car seat belt to the integrity of the joint strength of respiratory masks and IV connector fittings. In packaging, it is used to measure the elongation of materials like paper and board, as well as the maximum load they can take before failure.
It is one of the most versatile testing options available and should be part of virtually every QA process. Tensile testing can also be used to as a way for the metal industry to discover and analyze new alloys – opening up new and improved materials for all sorts of applications.
