Precision is essential when it comes to maintaining the integrity of a double seam. There are several crucial elements to calculate when seaming to ensure the seam is neither too tight nor too loose.  

When defects crop up, measurements are the best place to start. Our handy double seam overlap calculator was created to provide an estimated value of overlap, overlap % and BH butt when used with a mechanical micrometer gauge.  

Before you use the double seam calculator, let’s define the double seam inspection points it can help you measure. 

Double seam inspection points

  • Overlap: the overlap is often referred to as the “secondary seal” in the double seam. It measures the outer side of the double seam, as it interlocks over the body wall. 
  • Overlap %: simply a percentage of the overlap within the seam.  
  • Body hook butting (BH butting): percentages showing how much the body hook is embedded into the seaming compound and how much space there is available for the body hook in the seam.
