Introducing EMC Directive 89/336/EEC – Industrial Physics

Directive 89/336/EEC was the original European Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive, establishing essential requirements to ensure that electrical and electronic equipment:

  • does not generate electromagnetic disturbance beyond acceptable levels, and
  • has adequate immunity to external electromagnetic interference.

It was adopted on 3 May 1989 and later repealed in 2007, replaced by 2004/108/EC.

Despite being superseded, it remains relevant for legacy products, historical compliance, and long‑term documentation.
