Introducing ASTM D822 - Industrial Physics
ASTM D822 is a global ASTM international standard method for testing accelerated environmental exposure of paints or coatings using filtered open-flame carbon-arc devices.
This ASTM standard is all about selecting the right test conditions to show realistic accelerated exposure. That’s important, the ability of a paint or coating to resist deterioration of its physical and optical properties is significant for many applications.
Carbon arc testing gives you accelerated exposure information on weathering conditions such as artificial light, sunlight, humidity and heat. It uses three pairs of carbon rods that emit ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation when an electric current is passed between them.
ASTM D822 testing considerations
A filtered open-flame carbon arc system can provide more UV exposure than natural sunlight alone. The spectral power distribution of light from an open-flame carbon-arc is quite different to that produced in other light and water exposure devices - those using alternative carbon-arc configurations, or other light sources.
Carbon arc testing to ASTM D822 standards requires care and attention to detail. It’s important to regulate the line voltage, remove any salt or deposits from the water and control both temperature and humidity. Plus you’ve got to look after your electrodes and keep them in good condition.
If you’re seeking interlaboratory comparisons for your ASTM D822 testing then you’ll need to ensure all laboratories use the same type of carbon-arc, filters and exposure conditions.
ASTM D822 is not the right approach for determining deterioration caused by localized weather phenomena such as atmospheric pollution or saltwater exposure. If that’s what you need, get in touch today and we’ll talk you through the options.
