ASTM D689 is a global ASTM international standard for testing the internal tearing resistance of paper using an Elmendorf-type tearing tester.
This ASTM test method is widely used within the paper industry. It’s a paper internal tearing resistance test that’s used alongside other tests of strength. It helps you to realistically predict the end-use performance of a wide range of grades of papers.
Through the ASTM D689 test you measure the force perpendicular to the plane of the paper required to tear multiple sheets of paper. This is tested over a specified distance after the tear has started, using an Elmendorf-type tearing tester.
The tearing test results can be used to calculate the approximate tearing resistance of a single sheet, or a single sheet can be measured directly. You’ll also find similar procedures for Elmendorf-type tear inspection in ISO 1974 and TAPPI T414.
